Born on December 24, 1964, in Amalapuram, Sanjay Murthy is the son of KSR Murthy, a former MP and an experienced IAS officer. After completing his mechanical engineering studies, Sanjay joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1989, securing a position in the Himachal Pradesh cadre. Over his illustrious career, he served in several key administrative roles, including as the Secretary of Higher Education in the central government, where he played a pivotal role in implementing the New Education Policy.
Sanjay Murthy was set to retire from IAS in the coming months, but the central government recognized his extensive contributions and appointed him as the CAG. The CAG is a critical constitutional post responsible for auditing government finances and ensuring transparency. Appointees to this position serve for a maximum of 6 years or until the age of 65.
His father, KSR Murthy, represented Amalapuram in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections and also served as an IAS officer, holding the rank of Secretary in the central government. Sanjay’s appointment to this important role is seen as an honor for both his family and the Telugu community.
